“We are disgusted with this wretched food!” Numbers 21:5b
I’ve always had an affinity for this line in scripture. Have you ever said, “Oh come on, again?” Perhaps you’ve clenched your fists at your side and grumbled through grit teeth, “If one more thing breaks I’ll scream!” or “Enough already! I’ve had enough!” Then, there are the all time favorite complaints. “All I ever wanted was (fill in the blank)!” and “It’s not fair!” Yes, we all get disgusted with wretched food when it’s dished out to us seemingly time and again.
Most likely God won’t send snakes to bite us after we have made such exclamations but He is present. After complaining, when we’ve caught our breath, pulled it together, and proceeded to look squarely at and deal with the reality of the situation, God has made His presence known to us. He’s addressed what’s important–our inner state, not the external problem.
There’s usually no need to apologize for feeling frustrated or discouraged. However there is always a need to praise and thank God for His gifts of strength, wisdom, knowledge, courage, and perseverance. So the next time you find yourself saying, “Not again!” take a breath and say, “Thanks in advance.” God has put what you need to cope inside you, plus His spirit. What more do any of us need?
