“In Christ we were also chosen, destined in accord with the purpose of the One who accomplishes all things according to the intention of His will.” Ephesians 1:11
We have all heard it. Exercise, healthy diet, adequate sleep, right thinking, meaningful work, social contacts, and positive close relationships are the keys to health and happiness.
Are they really the keys to health and happiness for we Catholic Christians? Yes we are part of the human race and can’t pretend such things aren’t necessary for both physical and mental health. They are! Yet we can have all these things and still be unhealthy (and unhappy). We can lose them in an instant. What if physical health fails us and we can’t exercise or work? What if our social contacts go away? What if those closest to us fail us? Then what?
That’s where we Christians have the edge. We believe in God’s will. We believe that life may not go according to plan but even then we still have worth in God’s eyes. That is God’s will; that we have worth in His eyes. We have worth in His eyes even when we don’t in the eyes of all we know plus society at large.
God’s will for us is to be healthy in soul. The rest, though important and our responsibility to maintain, is secondary. Primary is the soul.
We can be confident our Lord will lead us where He wants us to be because to have worth means to make a contribution to His creation even if unseen by the world. So be confident that He will accomplish His purpose for you, which is always a greater and more holy good.
